In what in the span of world history is the snap of a finger, President Obama may have caused a seismic catastrophe: allowing Egypt to slip from U.S. ally back into Russian dominance.
It was always naive to pin our hopes on Egypt democratizing. As Thomas Sowell notes in his column on the opposite page, Egypt existed for millennia and, like the vast majority of the world, "never had a free or democratic society."
Even today's free nations took hundreds of years to achieve liberty. But, as Sowell says, "Barack Obama may have enough ego to imagine that he could accomplish, during his White House years, what took centuries to accomplish elsewhere."
